argyle house
parktown, johannesburg
2018
The newly renovated Argyle House is a five storey fully furnished student residence situated in close proximity to various higher education institutions within Johannesburg. Primarily, these include Wits Braamfontein Campus, Wits Education Campus and Wits Parktown Campus. Furthermore, the building is primly positioned alongside the city's major vehicular routes and highways demarcating itself as a top pick for students within the area.
As a heritage building, alterations to the façade were kept to a minimum. However, the building's face-lift required some repairs to the existing structure. On ground floor the entrance lobby is housed, along with parking facilities, a central courtyard and garden space, all of which have been renovated. Floors 1 to 4 comprise of large apartments whilst the 5th floor is made up of individual bedrooms with common ablutions, cooking and cleaning facilities.
Beyond this, an in-depth survey was done to assess the condition of each apartment, individual room and common area meaning the bulk of the alterations happened inside the apartments. Where possible, existing parquet floors were restored and existing fittings were retained/repaired to keep costs low. Each apartment received new divisions to create smaller single bedrooms (either 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8 bedrooms), together with shared bathrooms and kitchen.
Furthermore, new furniture was designed in accordance with student housing requirements and manufactured specifically for the bedrooms as well as the building common areas. Completed in late 2018, the building is currently fully let.
